Leadership holds a critical role in directing group activities towards common objectives, particularly in the dynamic healthcare environment. Tailoring various leadership philosophies is essential for fostering effective leadership in healthcare settings. Developing procedures that encourage employee collaboration towards shared goals is imperative. Effective leadership styles and change management are vital for ensuring the success and sustainability of healthcare organizations.

Fundamentally, leadership involves overseeing individuals or groups to achieve common goals. In healthcare, this often entails supervising medical professionals to ensure high-quality patient care. A key aspect of effective healthcare leadership involves establishing processes and structures that promote teamwork and collaboration among employees, achieved through clear communication channels, shared objectives, and a culture emphasizing teamwork and collaboration (Bass, 2019).

Analyzing Case Study

The case study titled “Sleeping on the Job: A Managerial Challenge” focuses on a nurse named Marty, who has faced personal challenges during her tenure in an office environment. Her responsibilities at home, including caring for aging parents, have led to a lack of personal time after work. Colleagues have expressed dissatisfaction with Marty’s work performance, citing instances of lateness, early departures, and falling asleep on the job. Additionally, she has missed work due to personal matters. Unfortunately, her manager has not provided any assistance or sought solutions.

To support Marty, her manager should evaluate measures to assist her and the entire staff. One approach could involve implementing transformational leadership, characterized by open communication with Marty. Through dialogue, the manager and Marty can identify barriers to her success and collaboratively devise an improvement plan. The manager can encourage Marty to share ideas on overcoming challenges and explore her career aspirations. Consistent communication and collaboration among all parties are essential for this approach (Alrowwad et al., 2020).

Leadership Strategy

Various leadership models can enhance leadership in healthcare. Some managers may opt for the transformational leadership model, empowering staff to work collectively towards common goals. Others may prefer a transactional leadership style, focusing on explicit goals and incentives for their attainment (Kelly & Hearld, 2020).

In healthcare settings, transformational leadership can be highly effective as it emphasizes teamwork, collaboration, and communication. It empowers individuals to take ownership of their work, fostering a shared sense of responsibility towards common objectives. By creating a positive work environment, transformational leaders establish trust and respect, enhancing employee engagement and job satisfaction, crucial in high-stress healthcare settings (Espinoza et al., 2018).

Applying Leadership Strategy

Addressing Marty’s situation involves tackling her subpar work performance and its impact on the nursing team. The most effective approach is transformational leadership, which motivates employees to realize their fullest potential. Marty’s personal circumstances affecting her performance can be addressed through motivation and inspiration.

Once a plan is established to address Marty’s performance, focus can shift to rebuilding trust among team members. Transformational leadership encourages employees to take ownership of their responsibilities, fostering open communication and effective collaboration.

Organizational Change Model and its Influence

The ADKAR model serves as a valuable framework for implementing change. Its stages—awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement—guide individuals through transformation.

In Marty’s case, initial steps involve discussing her past actions and the need for change. Cultivating a desire for change aligns with organizational objectives. Re-educating Marty about her role and providing ongoing support facilitate the transition. Positive reinforcement prevents reverting to previous behaviors.

The Implication of Care Policy and Legislation

Nurses influence public health policy due to their patient interactions and community knowledge. The American Nurses Association (ANA) advocates for policies promoting nurses’ well-being. The “Healthy Nurse. Healthy Nation” program emphasizes health and safety policy, providing resources for nurses to improve their well-being.

This initiative can positively impact Marty, addressing her health challenges and improving her job performance. Advocating for nurses’ health enhances healthcare quality.
